Snow had come over the mountains, hidden in the deep core of the Earth Kingdom. After Kei left them, no visitor was seen for the whole winter and Iris eventually felt safe enough up there to loosen a bit on her rules: now Ilah was allowed to get to the river all alone, and since her firebending skills also improved, sometimes her mother even let her go hunting. The only things Ilah really missed were her father and lady Lien: sometimes she woke up at night, believing she was still at the Royal Palace and that she had to wait only a few hours to see them in the morning. Then she hugged her doll, knowing that she wasn't going to see them again. She tried to talk her mother about it, but every time she mentioned her father, she had gotten so angry Ilah was almost scared: apparently he was guilty of high treason... though Ilah had studied high treason with Lien and she could hardly believe her father could do such a thing. First of all because he was the Emperor: how could the head of the state conspire against it? But mom was deaf to any argumentation she presented so Ilah eventually gave up.

Living on the mountains wasn't bad, anyway. They had a field to grow crops, a nice, solid house made of stone, hidden between the peeks. They had their own pool, concealed in a cave and enlightened by reflecting gems: she even learned how to warm up the pool without making all the water evaporate and when the fire was lightened up, that place was magical. Even Sozin liked it and they had great times together. She wasn't sure of the reason why she couldn't talk to him when they were both at the Royal Palace, but now that they lived together she grew to like him. He was a nice brother, afterall. He had a lot to learn, yet she loved to teach him, and above all she enjoyed spending so much time with her mother: they never had so much fun when they were in the Fire Nation... though mom wasn't happy. Now that she was 8 years old she could see it.

Ilah crossed the field covered by snow: temperature was slowly warming up as the day passed, but she was still cold. Mom was busy cooking lunch and Ilah knew she had a few hours free before the afternoon classes, so she took her makeshift sledge and made it slide down the path heading to the river. A snowdrift stopped her and she stepped down the sledge. It was then, that something unusual cought her attention. "Stay here" she told her doll, examining the pawprint. It was an unusual mark, far bigger than the ones she used to see on the mountains... and there were many more, on the other side of the river. She had seen those kind of pawprints before... but what could a mongoose dragon do over there? They were cold blooded animals, it was too cold for them up on the montains. She cautiously crossed the river, following the pawprints.
